HOSPITAL WING Introduction: NIH Islamabad is a WHO's recognized collaborative center for research and training in tropical diseases. In accordance with the function of NIH for diagnosis and surveillance of diseases the Hospital Wing formerly known as Clinical Research Division was established under an approved PC-1 as separate 50 bedded hospital with both out-door as well as indoor facilities. Objectives/Targets: Presently Hospital Wing is providing out-door medical services: o To 10,000 patients (employees and their families) and to the rural population of Islamabad residing around NIH, Islamabad. o Fully equipped emergency dept with day and night services to the NIH employees and their dependents. o Emergency coverage to the rural population surrounding NIH, in addition asthmatic, allergy patients and animal bite cases coming from all over the country to NIH are also being treated at Hospital Wing. o The EPI center working in the Hospitals Wing is providing control coverage to six killer diseases. o Family planning center under the control of Population Welfare Division of Pakistan is working in the Hospital Wing and is providing contraceptive treatment to entitled and non entitled patients. o Homeopathic and: Unani OPD's working in the Hospital Wing is giving choice of treatment to the patients of NIH. o Our country is situated in the Sub-Tropical region. We are coming across many tropical diseases like Salmonellosis, Leishmaniasis, Malaria, Tuberculosis, Dengue fever and many other bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic disease in our Country. o Due to irrational use of antibiotics and increase in the numbers of AIDS patients certain strains of microorganisms are becoming resistant to conventional therapies and there is emergence and re-emergence of certain diseases in the world e.g. Atypical Mycobacteria, deep fungal infections, skin disease/diarrheas etc, and we have to keep an eye/watch on such diseases even in our country by continuous research, survey and trial of drugs, which is our future plan. o Study on the etiology, of communicable and non-communicable diseases on the preventive/curative aspects. o A well equipped dermatology unit can be set up in the Hospital Wing.
Organization/Personnel The Hospital Wing is currently be looked after by a BPS-18 Officer Incharge who is assisted by the following staff: Doctors Medical Officers (Female) 03 Medical Officers (Male) 03 Nursing Staff Head Nurse 01 Charge Nurse 02 Paramedical Staff Ward Master 01 Store Keeper 01 Dispenser 01 Lab. Assistant 02 Ward Attendant 02 Ward Boy 01 Naib Qasid 03 Laborer 01 Sanitary Workers 04 Office Staff Assistant 01 LDC 01 Achievements · Due to better facility and in time treatment the number of patients visiting Hospital Wing has increased. · Successfully operating Skin OPD in Hospital Wing since April, 1999.
· National Rabies referral center has been established.
· Provincial focal persons in all four provinces including AJK and Northern have been nominated.
· A federal technical advisory cum intersectoral coordination committee under the chairmanship of DG health for implementing the national plan and formulating policy guidelines have been constituted. Future Plans/Goals: Establishment of following facilities for the out patients: o Gynae/Obs. OPD with antenatal booking o Skin OPD o Diabetic Clinical o Asthma Clinic. o Surgical/Orthopedic OPD.
Establishment of the following facilities for In-Door Patients: § Dermatology Unit § Gynae 10 beds ward with labor room facility § Isolation ward for communicable diseases § Within and outside the country training programs for doctors § Collaboration with Institutions and agencies in and outside the country like AFIP, PIMS, FGSH and WHO.
Special Projects. Running WHO funded project on Rabies Prevention and Control in Pakistan for the Biennium 2000-2001. ALLERGY CENTRE Introduction.
Allergy Wing is one of an important wing of NIH. It was started in 1981 and was initially housed in the PHD. Later on it was shifted to CRD. A number of trials to test the patients suffering from seasonal allergy, extrinsic bronchial asthma, allergic rhinatis, hay fever, spring catarrah were undertaken in 1979-80. Various antigen from pollen, grasses, weeds, house dust were prepared and tested successfully. Many patients were benefited from the allergy vaccine and the patients started coming from all over the country. From 1981 to date the number of patients which was initially hundreds has increased to thousands per year. At present the patients are being tested in the Allergy Center and the required vaccines are issued where as the production of the vaccine is a part Biological Production Division of this institute. The vaccines are being produced from our native allergens. Objective/Targets 1. To provide Immunotherphy to the patients suffering from various allergic problems. 2. At present the allergen being tested are pollen, dust, paper mulberry thresher, raw cotton, rice wheat, protein like fish, egg beef, mutton and chicken meat. The allergen vaccines being prepared are against their antigens and various combinations thereof. The number of allergens, need to be increased so that the patients can be tested against all the important native allergens. 3. To increase the production of vaccine and extend the facility to other provinces. 4. To make it a Center of Excellence for Allergy and other allergic diseases. Routine Services Provided. Diagnosis and treatment of all Allergic Disorders. AchievementsOver 70,000 patients per year are treated at the Allergy Wing and earning Revenue worth Rs.30 (M) with 65-70 % Excellent results.
