Useful links for students of Epigenetics | MICROBIOLOGY SYLLABUS Introduction The College of Medical Laboratory Technology (CMLT) is a prestigious institution of the country imparting quality training in its work field since 1961. The college is an integral component of the National Institute of Health Islamabad, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan and is widely recognized at the national and international level. The CMLT, previously called School of Medical Technology (SMT), was established in 1961 at Karachi by the Government of Pakistan to meet the ever-increasing demand of competent, well trained Medical Laboratory Technicians. Later on, it was shifted to National Health Laboratories (NHL) Islamabad. In 1965, it became integrated with it and has been functioning as its Training Subdivision since 1970. In 1980, when National Institute of Health was established, it became a part of this Institute and was subsequently upgraded in 1989 with the assistance of Asian Development Bank as college.
The college building consists of F.Sc., B.Sc. and the newly established B.Sc. (Hons) blocks housed within the main campus of the National Institute of Health, Islamabad. In addition to the administrative offices, the building is equipped with practical laboratories and spacious classrooms. The facilities of central library, cafeteria and auditorium are also open for the students. The Boys Hostel located near NIH colony has all the requisite facilities for its boarder students. It has the capacity to accommodate about 130 students coming from the far flung areas of the country. The Girls Hostel is now ready.
Initially, the School of Medical Laboratory Technology was offering certificate course of one-year duration only which was subsequently extended to one and a half year. Now the period of Training for award of diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology is of two years instead of one and a half year. For award of the certificate (HSSC-MLT), the college has now been affiliated with the Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (FBISE) Islamabad. This has been done to keep it as par with Intermediate level of college education in Pakistan. In addition to F.Sc. M.L.T., the college is also running B.Sc. MLT classes in its morning (regular) & evening shifts (self-finance) in affiliation with the University of the Punjab, Lahore; the college has now started B.Sc (Hons) four year classes with Affiliation from King Edward Medical College University. Aims & Objectives To produce well-trained and qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists who can work efficiently in any branch of Medical Laboratory. To provide Laboratory Tutors for para-medical training Institutions in the country and abroad. To equip them with the basic necessary knowledge which can be helpful in acquiring special skills at later stage. To make them fully conversant with Public Health subjects, as Medical Laboratory Services are part of the health team of which they will be members. To inculcate basic human and Islamic values to the trainees so that they are sympathetic and considerate in their practical lives. Routine Services Provided Being an Academic Institution, training services are provided in the field of Medical Lab. Technology, i.e., F. Sc. & B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). and B.Sc (Hons) in Medical Laboratory Technology (HMLT). Activities/Achievements 60 students are admitted every year in to 1st year F. Sc. and 24 in 3rd year B.Sc. In B.Sc (Hons) 30 students are enrolled, 20 seats are for F.Sc (pass) student on merit and 10 students are from F.Sc (MLT) open merit selection. B.Sc. MLT self-finance scheme has been launched in 2001 in order to provide the opportunities of higher education to the interested students. Due to strict implementation of merit, the students of this college have been regularly securing top positions in the Punjab University Lahore and Federal Board Islamabad during last three years. The facilities of On Job Training have been arranged in the Pathology Departments of the major hospitals of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Holding of co-curricular activities on important events is a regular feature in the college. In the same context, the students of CMLT participated in House-to-House vaccination Campaign against Polio arranged by CDA during the years 2000-2003. Future Plans Keeping in view the above-mentioned constraints, a development plan has been prepared which is to be completed in three years as follows: The future vision for the college has also been developed which is aimed at uplifting of the training standards according to the international requirements. The same would be implemented after completion of the above said projects. Refresher courses for the in-service Laboratory Technicians/Technologists will also be launched after addition of the requisite facilities. |
