1. Introduction

NIH Central Library is a specialized Bio-Medical Library which was established when NHL project was initiated in 1960. It is the biggest one among the Medical libraries of Rawalpindi & Islamabad region. This is also the designated National Focal of World Health Organization (WHO NFP) for Pakistan since 1978 and playing vital role to promote the Health Literature Information services with kind co-operation of WHO.

2. Objectives

The main objective of the library is to provide Health Information support to promote the scientific research activities.

3. Functions

This Library is fulfilling the scientific information needs of the entire set up of NIH (doctors, scientists & researchers) and also facilitates the other Medical/Scientific Organizations of the country upon request in relation to their research activities by providing reprints of the requisite articles.

4. Mission

To meet the expanded Health information needs of the Medical Researchers/Scientists within limited resources and mutual co-operation of other medical libraries of the country.

8. Co-Operation

Since NIH Central Library is the designated WHO Focal Point for the country, thereby, WHO is providing continuous sincere support by sending their own publications, scientific books, leading journals of WHO/other publishers, technical reports and CD-ROMs/ MEDLINE databases etc.on complimentary basis.

The students involved in higher studies leading to Phil, PhD. And Post-doc from Islamabad & Rawalpindi usually consults our library for reference and reprint support.

Requests of periodical articles/reprints received from other Scientific & Medical Institutions of the country are also entertained subject to availability in our library.

9. Future Plans

In the light of available resources, all out efforts will be made gradually to improve the existing infrastructure of the library on modern technical lines with the use of IT based information technology to maintain it in progressive smooth functioning order.
