1. Introduction
The College of Medical Laboratory Technology (CMLT) is a prestigious institution of the country imparting quality training in the field of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) sine 1961. The CMLT is one of the integral components of the National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad and widely recognized at the national and international levels.
The CMLT was initially established as School of Medical Technology (SMT) at Karachi in 1961 and it was the first School in the field of Medical Technology in Pakistan. It was established by the Government of Pakistan to meet the ever-increasing demand of competent, well-trained Medical Laboratory Technicians. The SMT along-with other components of National Health Laboratories (NHL), Ministry of Health was shifted to Islamabad in 1965. In 1980, the NHL became National Institute of Health (NIH), an autonomous body of the Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan. Hence, the SMT became a fundamental and mandatory component of NIH as well. In 1989, the status of the School (SMT) was up-graded to the College (CMLT) with the assistance of Asian Development Bank.

Objectives

To produce well-trained and qualified Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists to fulfill the national need for Health Laboratories.

To provide Laboratory Tutors for Para-medical Training Institutions in the country and abroad.

To equip them with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge for acquiring special skills at later stage.

To make them fully conversant with public health subjects as medical laboratory services are part of the health team of which they will be members.

To inculcate basic human and Islamic Values to the trainees so that they are sympathetic and considerate in their practical lives at the national and international level.

To strengthen the National Health Care Delivery System through Human Resource Development providing high quality, academic and practical training in the field of MLT.

Setup of College of Medical Lab. Technology
Campus:
The college building consists of Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) block & B.Sc. (Hons) Block are situated within the main campus of the National Institute of Health, Islamabad. In addition to the administrative offices, the building is equipped with practical laboratories and spacious classrooms. The facilities of central library, cafeteria and Burney auditorium are also open for the students. The Boys’ Hostel located near NIH colony has all the requisite facilities for its boarder students. It has the capacity to accommodate about 130 students coming from the far-flung areas of the country.
Faculty:
The Principal who is facilitated in Academic Affairs by the Academic Council heads the College. The college faculty (permanent and visiting) comprises of qualified and experienced members. The services of renowned experts from other Institutions are hired as visiting faculty for the benefit of its students in addition to the permanent teaching staff.

The regular meetings of the Academic Council are held once in three months to discuss academic affairs & problems related to the students of CMLT. The Academic Council may however, with the approval of the Chairman, meet any time to discuss urgent matters. The Principal, CMLT is responsible to implement the decisions of the Council. The council has the authority to formulate/amend the college/hostel rules & regulations as required from time to time.

02 years B.Sc. MLT course has been replaced by 04 years B.Sc. (Hons) MLT course with effect from the session 2008 in affiliation with King Edward Medical University, Lahore.
Due to strict implementation of merit, the students of this college have been regularly securing top positions in the Punjab University Lahore and Federal board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Islamabad during last three years.

Development Projects
The following projects under PC-1 have been completed:

Extension/strengthening of the College of Medical Lab. Technology worth Rs.35.01 million.

Construction of hostel for female students of CMLT at worth of Rs.28.02 million.

The CMLT has launched 04 years B.Sc. (Hons) MLT course w.e.f. January 2008 and the 1st semester has been successfully completed.

Collaboration with other Institutions/Organization
The Facilities of On Job Training are arranged for students of CMLT at Pathology Departments of Teaching Hospitals of Rawalpindi & Islamabad.
8.
Future Plans
Steps will be initiated for postgraduate classes at Master level in various subjects of Medical Lab. Technology as soon as per the required teaching faculty for the B.Sc. MLT is arranged on permanent basis.
